The "New South" is a common term these days, and it’s not difficult to understand why. The American South is a region with a history of both beautiful cultural contributions as well as political upheaval; it’s a varied place and its identity is a complex and at times even conflicted one. The "New South" terminology denotes that it’s an area that’s always changing—that the American South of today is very different from the American South of, say, fifty or a hundred or two hundred years ago.

Reed Gold Mine is an important historic landmark located in Midland, Cabarrus County, North Carolina, just over 20 minutes outside of Charlotte, NC. It is known to be the site of the first documented gold find in the United States and is considered one of North Carolina’s greatest historical assets. In fact, North Carolina led the nation in gold production until 1948. Gold mining was second only to farming in the number of North Carolina residents it employed during its peak years.

The Carolinas Aviation Museum is a Charlotte, NC historic landmark, located next to Charlotte Douglas International Airport, which is quite an appropriate location for an aviation museum. It exists to preserve the aviation history of the Queen City and the Carolinas. Founded in 1992 by Floyd and Lois Wilson, the Museum contains a collection of over 50 static aircraft and many other smaller, historic aviation items, which are relevant to the historical development of aviation in the Carolinas.

Run by Discovery Place, Inc., a non-profit organization, the Charlotte Nature Museum has been providing information about natural and social history in Charlotte, North Carolina for years. Fun for both kids and adults, this Queen City attraction provides the hands-on experience that many people need to truly get involved in the natural wonders of the world.
