Kings Mountain: The Queen City’s Best Nature Spot

Kings Mountain embraces as its vision and theme: “Active, Healthy, Historic,” a phrase which accurately describes the city, located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains between Greenville, South Carolina, and Charlotte, NC. The city takes its name from the Battle of Kings Mountain, which is one of the most important battles in American history, dubbed the turning point of the American Revolution in the South.

Charlotte, North Carolina is one of the largest cities in the region, boasting a beautiful skyline, a bustling professional network, and some of the best restaurants in the South. But what makes the Queen City special is not just its urban appeal, but its ability to balance the city’s high-tempo lifestyle with parks and preserves that retain its natural beauty.

Located on the east side of UNC Charlotte’s campus, the Queen City’s main public 4-year institution. The UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens complex is comprised of 10 acres of outdoor gardens, and consists of 3 main areas – the McMillan Greenhouse, the 3-acre Susie Harwood Garden and the 7-acre Van Landingham Glen, all located together. Each garden offers something unique.

Theme parks have long been a popular destination for families seeking a great vacation. Colonel Francis Beatty Park is located just minutes from downtown Matthews, a small town right outside of the Charlotte, NC city limits. This 265-acre park is the perfect site for nature enthusiasts and sports lovers to retreat for a day. With two basketball courts, six tennis courts, five lighted soccer fields and two horseshoe pits, Colonel Beatty Park has plenty of space for individuals or teams to participate in a variety of recreational activities.

What do you think of when you hear the word "park"? What about when you hear the words "a park in the city"? Most likely, images akin to famous photographs in Central Park spring to mind—a sprawling green oasis at the center of the metropolitan environment. Charlotte, North Carolina has many city parks that may fit this bill (though they are much smaller than the famed Central Park), but the Queen City also has one park that stands out from the rest.

Charlotte Motor Speedway Brings NASCAR to the Queen City

Charlotte Motor Speedway is one of the busiest sports venues in the country, hosting more than 380 events in a single year. Located in Concord, North Carolina, just minutes away from the Queen City, this 2,000-acre racing complex features a Quad-oval track that is 1.5 miles long and hosts a variety of NASCAR racing events, including the Coca-Cola 600 and the Sprint All-Star Race.
